Biography
Mireya Moscoso was the President of Panama from 1999 to 2004, representing the Arnulfista Party. She was Panama’s first female President and oversaw the handover of the Panama Canal from the U.S. to Panama.
Moscoso was born in 1946. After graduating from High School, she was employed as a secretary. In the 1960s she met Arnulfo Arias, the former president of Panama and began to work on his political campaigns. Afterwards she studied interior design at the Miami-Dade Community College in the United States. In 1990 Moscoso helped create the Arnulfista Party, of which she became president the following year. In 1999 she won the presidential election. |
