In Memoriam: President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro

The Council of Women World Leaders expresses its profound sorrow at the passing of Her Excellency Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, former President of the Republic of Nicaragua.

President Chamorro made history as the first woman in the Americas to be elected Head of State through a democratic process. Her presidency (1990-1997) marked a transformative chapter in Nicaragua’s history, guiding the nation from civil conflict toward peace, reconciliation, and democratic renewal. Her dedication to dialogue, institutional reform, and the restoration of civil liberties stands as an enduring testament to her leadership and vision. 

Beyond her national legacy, President Chamorro’s courage and integrity continue to inspire generations of women leaders across the globe. Through her example, she demonstrated that principled leadership, rooted in compassion and conviction, can be a powerful force for unity and progress.
