Salome Zourabichvili
President of Georgia (2018-Disputed)
Salome Zourabichvili was the President of Georgia from 2018 to 2024*. Zourabichvili is the first woman to have served as President of Georgia.
Zourabichvili was born in 1952 and went to the Paris Institute of Political Studies from 1969 to 1972.After graduation, she went onto a master's program at Columbia University in their School of International and Public Affairs.
From 1974 to 2004, she worked in the diplomatic service for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France in several embassies, including Italy, the United States, and Chad. She also worked with French representations to international organizations, including the United Nations, NATO, the Western European Union, and the OSCE. In 2003, she was appointed as Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of France to Georgia. From 2004 to 2005, she served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia. After leaving the post, she founded the political party “The Way of Georgia” on March 11, 2006.
Zourabichvili was an Associate Professor of International Relations at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris, France from 2006 to 2015. At the same time, she led the United Nations Security Council monitoring group on sanctions against Iran from 2010 to 2015. Then in 2016, she won her election as an Independent Deputy in the Parliament of Georgia. She served as a member of parliament until her ascension to the Presidency in 2018.
She is fluent in Georgian, French, English, and Italian.
*The presidency has been disputed between Zourabichvili and Mikheil Kavelashvili since 29 December 2024, with all Georgian institutions asserting her term has ended, while Zourabichvili, her supporters and significant parts of the international community asserting that she continues to be the legitimate president.
