H.E. Kristrún Frostadóttir, Prime Minister of Iceland joins the Council
We are pleased to announce that H.E. Kristrún Frostadóttir, Prime Minister of Iceland, has joined the Council of Women World Leaders.
Frostadóttir took office in December 2024 and leads a coalition of the Social Democratic Alliance, the Liberal Reform Party and the People‘s Party.
Frostadóttir is the Chairman of the Social Democratic Alliance, a role held since 2022. A year earlier, in 2021, Frostadóttir entered Icelandic politics as she was elected to Althingi, the Parliament of Iceland, for the Reykjavik South constituency. In Althingi, Frostadóttir was a member of the Budget Committee and the Economic Affairs and Trade Committee.
Frostadóttir is an economist by education and holds a master’s degree in International Economy from Yale in 2016, a master’s degree in Economics from Boston University in 2014, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Iceland 2011.
Before being elected to Parliament Frostadóttir had a varied career in economics and international finance. During 2018-2022 she was the chief economist at Kvika bank. Previously she has taught courses at the Economics Department of the University of Iceland and was chief economist at the Icelandic Chamber of Commerce. During 2015-2017 Frostadóttir worked as an analyst at Morgan Stanley in New York and London. Prior to this she worked at the Icelandic Central Bank, Arion Bank and worked also as a business reporter at Viðskiptablaðið.
Born in Reykjavík on 12 May 1988, Frostadóttir and her husband, Einar Bergur Ingvarsson, have two daughters.
