Magdalena Andersson was the Prime Minister of Sweden between 2021 and 2022. She is the first woman to have held that role.
Magdalena Andersson is a Swedish economist and Social Democratic politician. She has served as Leader of the Opposition since October 2022 and as Leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party since November 2021 . Elected to the Riksdag in 2014 for Stockholm County, she previously held the influential office of Minister for Finance from 2014 to 2021.
In November 2021, Andersson made history as Sweden’s first female Prime Minister. Her premiership lasted until October 2022, when she stepped down after her center-left coalition lost the general election to Ulf Kristersson
Andersson's academic credentials include a master’s degree in economics from the Stockholm School of Economics (1992) . Her early career included advisory roles in Göran Persson’s administration, serving as Director of Planning and advisor to Mona Sahlin, and leadership positions within the Swedish Tax Agency and party economic policy .
From 2020 to 2022, Andersson served as Chair of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC), becoming the first woman to hold that position .
Known for her pragmatic, technocratic leadership style and often nicknamed the “Bulldozer,” she focused on strengthening Sweden’s welfare state, combating organized crime, and advancing climate policy .
