World Economic Forum
Since 2005, the Council of Women World Leaders has maintained a strong relationship with the World Economic Forum (WEF) through participating in the Women Leaders Advisory Board, the Gender Parity Program, the Global Agenda Council for Women’s Empowerment, and the Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
Recent Events
Several Council Members spoke and engaged in interviews at the forum this year where 22% of the participants were female. Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Arden took part in the panels ‘Mental Health Matters’ and ‘More than GDP’ and was interviewed by Politico to discuss her political philosophy. Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke at the plenary session about the international responsibility people in power have towards the global issue of poverty. Former President of Chile Michelle Bachelet participated in the press conference ‘Are we there yet? The status of LGBTI Inclusion’ and the panel ‘Taking Action for the Ocean.’ Her Excellency Bachelet and President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė both participated in the panel ‘Female Leadership at a Tipping Point.’ President Grybauskaitė also spoke about Brexit to Euronews. Former Prime Minister of New Zealand Helen Clark led the panel ‘The Future of Hospitals’ and participated in the breakfast held by Women Political Leaders, which focused on strengthening the network between global high-level leaders. Politico interviewed Former Prime Minister of Denmark Helle Thorning-Schmidt on children raised in war zones. Secretary-General Laura Liswood led the panel ‘The Female Icon’ and was interviewed by Deutsche Welle on the issue of gender equality among leaders in politics and business.

Madeleine Albright
Founding Chair Ministerial Initiative, Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was the first woman to hold the cabinet post as Secretary of State of the United States. Dr. Albright received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, from President Obama on May 29, 2012. She is the founding Chair of the Ministerial Initiative for the Council of Women World Leaders (1996-2007). |
Margot Wallström
Chair Ministerial Initiative and Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden In 2007, Wallström became Chair of the Ministerial Initiative of the Council for Women World Leaders. In 2010, Ban Ki-Moon, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, appointed her the first Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict. Upon the completion of her term with the United Nations, Wallström became chair of the University Board of Lund University in Sweden (2012-2014). Since May 2016 she has been Sweden’s Minister for Nordic Cooperation. |

Initiated in 1998 with the convening of high-level women in finance, economics, and development, the Council of Women World Leaders launched an effort to shape national and international agendas by encouraging ministerial level exchanges. Formally launched in 2002, the Ministerial Initiative provides an opportunity to identify and address the particular challenges facing women in ministerial leadership positions and to increase their visibility both nationally and internationally. Led by the Honorable Madeleine K. Albright, U.S. Secretary of State (1997-2001), the Ministerial Initiative has convened summits of ministers and other high level women leaders from diverse portfolios to address the most pressing issues of the day. Currently Chaired by European Commission Vice President and UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict Margot Wallström, the Council’s Ministerial Initiatives are dedicated to advancing democracy, gender equality, and excellence in governance throughout the world.

Vital Voices Civic Engagement Fellowship
The Council of Women World Leaders partners with Vital Voices and the VVEngage Fellowship. This fellowship advances women’s political leadership and the SDGs by conducting online and in-person trainings with experts such as women leaders from the Vital Voices Global Network and professors from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. The fellowship also connects participants to a global network of peers and mentors, such as current and former female heads of state with the Council of Women World Leaders, with whom they can brainstorm and share challenges and best practices.

The Council of Women World Leaders has been partnering with Women Political Leaders since 2016, when the Global Summit was held in Amman, Jordan. Women Political Leaders is a not-for-profit foundation that strives in all its activities to demonstrate the impact of more women in political leadership, for the global better.

Ministerial Initiative Objectives
- Provide a vehicle for women leaders to have a collective voice on global issues
- Prepare, inform, and shape the agendas for United Nations meetings and other multilateral meetings, conferences and conventions with an emphasis on the gender dimensions of the issues at hand
- Increase the visibility, participation and voice of women ministers through the media, governments, academia, civil society and other policy bodies
- Share best practices and experiences amongst ministers with varying levels of tenure, government support, and number of women in individual country cabinets
- Serve as a resource for women leaders capable of assuming other leadership roles for multilateral, intergovernmental, and national governments
